Dino Play Zone

Project Overview

HC Dinosaur created Dino Play Zone, a 10-unit interactive attraction for an indoor family entertainment center in Amsterdam. Unlike standard large-scale animatronics, this project focused on smaller, softer, child-friendly dinosaurs designed for continuous play: a gentle Brachiosaurus that lowers its head for photo opportunities, bobbing baby Triceratops, and a friendly Stegosaurus with a slide integrated into its back. All units feature rounded, padded exteriors, low-speed movement, and washable surfaces suited to a busy family venue. HC Dinosaur delivered themed play structures, sound effects, soft lighting, and a simple touch-button control system that staff can operate without technical training. The compact installation was completed in just five days during a scheduled venue closure. The play zone was designed in close consultation with the center's operations team, who set strict limits on sound levels and lighting brightness to keep the space comfortable for toddlers. Birthday-party packages built around the dinosaurs have become one of the venue's best-selling offerings.

Challenges & Solutions

Designing animatronics for direct child interaction introduced safety requirements beyond standard attractions: no pinch points, soft-edge construction, low operating speeds, and materials that withstand frequent cleaning and disinfection. Every unit passed independent child-safety inspection before opening. The venue's limited floor space and ceiling height required compact engineering and creative use of vertical space, with several dinosaurs integrated into climbing structures. HC Dinosaur also minimized electrical exposure by running all control systems through a single locked service panel accessible only to venue staff.
